Ganesh Haloi’s artistic journey displays a fascinating evolution from pure landscapes to innerscapes. As Haloi himself puts it, “Everything begins in pain,” reflecting the profound emotional depth in his art.

Primarily known for his breath-taking landscapes, Haloi ventured into portraiture during a short period in 1995, focusing on children and middle-aged women. Within a span of just 2-3 months, he created a limited set of portraits imbued with intense and brooding expressions, skilfully rendered with a sketch-like quality using pencil, gouache, or pastel on paper. Notably, the present lot stands out as the sole portrait executed on board, showcasing the artist’s versatility. The present lot is a rare example of Haloi’s experiments with portraiture.
